ACTION ALERTS
Write to Senator Jake Corman to oppose the bill in the Pennsylvania Assembly that will transfer the lands of Spring Creek Canyon to the ownership of Penn State University. Senator Corman is presently the most important figure in the Alliance's campaign. While Corman recently announced a delay in the land transfer, his desired long-term recipient of the lands still appears to be Penn State. His information is under WHO TO CONTACT below.
Other immediate action alerts will be placed here when necessary.
NEWS
SEPTEMBER 25, 2008: Robert D. Steele, Dean of the Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences and a key player in the University's efforts to acquire lands at Spring Creek Canyon, has announced his resignation effective July 2009. The opinions on the Spring Creek Canyon land transfer for potential candidates for this position should be monitored closely by members of the Alliance.
SEPTEMBER 22, 2008: State Senator Jake Corman announces that the land transfer will not happen this year. For the full announcement from the Senator's office, click here. Corman has adopted the "plan first, divest second" philosophy of many of the Alliance's member organizations, as well as much of the public. However, the Senator still favors the opinions of ClearWater Conservancy, which has advocated transfer to Penn State University --- a plan that is fundamentally opposed by the Alliance.
SEPTEMBER 5, 2008: The Pennsylvania House of Representatives has passed a bill that authorizes transfer of the canyon to Benner Township and the uplands to Penn State University. S.B. 740 (as amended) is presently in the Pennsylvania Senate Rules Committee. The PA Legislature will be back in session in mid-September.
